We have been re-building our old farm property since about 2010. It may never be finished, as there is always yet another thing to do. Thankfully we enjoy building and renovating, and it’s as much our pastime as well as a way of life for us.
We have never had a single tradesman to do work on the property. We do it all. Ground-works, plumbing, electrics, joinery and roofing. Obviously we get a qualified expert to come and inspect/sign-off any work that needs to be legally approved, but that’s as far as it goes.
It’s hard to call most of the work we have done “renovation”, as it is really more “re-building”. Our first job when we moved in was to replace 45 metres of slate roof, including all of the timber structure, on our stone barns (steadings). It hasn’t got any easier from there….

With the cost of energy constantly rising, it’s time to install a solar photovoltaic system. We will never be completely self sufficient, as winter is WAY too dark here, but we” get close.
