Keeping Kinda Busy

Working toward self sufficiency

We’re always keeping busy here on the farm. It’s not a working farm anymore, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have a huge amount of work to do.The buildings date back to 1870, and we’ve had to re-build and re-roof all of them. We do all of our building work ourselves, and have never had a trades-person on site.

We grow a lot of our own fruit and vegetables in our small orchard and vegetable gardens. The runner ducks provide an abundance of eggs, and our bee hives supply a fantastic amount of honey each year. This all keeps us busy, as well as giving us a backdrop that continually changes with the seasons.

Plus with all of our other Scottish critter residents, hobbies and pastimes, there’s never a dull day. So we’re sharing a little of our life on this site, and I hope you enjoy reading some of the articles and stories.

Animals and Wildlife

It’s about birds, animals and insects.

Garden

With nearly an acre of ground, we are slowly increasing our vegetable and fruit production.

We live next to large areas of Scottish woodlands. Some of it is pine forest, some native broad-leaf. Foraging is a largely forgotten skill, which has caught our interest more and more over the years. In this section you can follow some of our foraging efforts.

Recipes

Food is such an important thing to keep interesting. Especially when you grow much of your own ingredients.

We’re always trying to find different ways to use a glut of fresh produce, so this is a section we’re we’ve catalogued some of our favorite recipes.

building our 150 year old farm

Building

With a 150 year old farmhouse that we’ve re-built and extended, plus a huge stone barn to renovate, there’s a huge amount of building work to be done.

We’ve never had a trades-person on site, and we’ve had to learn everything from groundworks and drainage, to stone-masonry, roofing and electrics.

We’re modernising this old farm with PV solar, underfloor heating and numerous systems to make life warmer and more comfortable.
